AAN Delegation to the AMA House of Delegates
AAN COMMITTEES
This delegation represents the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) in the American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates (HOD), the policy-setting body of the AMA. Delegation members participate in the introduction of, debate on, and votes on policy proposals during HOD meetings. Delegates may help develop resolutions on behalf of the AAN, offer testimony on reports and resolutions being considered by the HOD, and vote on reports, resolutions, and officers of the AMA. Up to eight members of the Delegation represent the AAN in the full HOD as a Delegate or Alternate Delegate. Additionally, one member participates as the AAN’s Delegate to the Young Physicians Section (YPS), and up to two members participate at the AAN’s Delegate to the Residents and Fellows Section (RFS).

Job Description
Delegation Responsibilities
- Assess opportunities to advance AAN advocacy priorities within the AMA HOD through resolution sponsorship, co-sponsorship, or reports developed by the AMA Councils.
Individual Responsibilities
- Meetings:
- Based on the needs of the Delegation, attend the five-day AMA HOD Annual Meeting, and attend the four-day AMA HOD Interim Meeting.
- Not attending two or more meetings in a two-year period may result in review or suspension of Delegation membership.
- Attend a two-hour meeting during the AAN’s Annual Meeting (as schedule permits).
- Based on the needs of the Delegation, attend the five-day AMA HOD Annual Meeting, and attend the four-day AMA HOD Interim Meeting.
- Come to the AMA Annual and Interim Meetings prepared to represent the AAN and to brief the Section Council on any assigned Reference Committees.
- Attend assigned Reference Committees and testify on behalf of the AAN, as necessary.
- Testify in the AMA HOD on behalf of the AAN as necessary.
- Be willing to serve on Reference Committees, if invited.
- Be willing to run for leadership positions within the AMA HOD.
Selection/Appointment
All Delegation positions are appointed by the AAN President to serve for a two-year term provided the qualifications the AMA sets for each role are met by the individual. All members of the AAN Delegation must be current AMA members. Because of the uniqueness of the AMA HOD process, Delegation members are not typically subject to the same term limits of other AAN committees.
Meeting Schedule
The AMA HOD Annual Meeting is held every June in Chicago, IL (Saturday to Wednesday). The AMA HOD Interim Meeting is held in rotating locations every November (Saturday to Tuesday).
Estimated Time Commitment
Two hours per month outside of the five-day meeting every June and the four-day meeting every November.
Committee Composition
The AAN Delegation to the AMA includes the following members:
- Chair and Vice Chair (also HOD Delegates)
- Two additional HOD Delegates – These individuals must be current AMA members and be available to attend the entire AMA HOD Annual and Interim Meetings. Delegates should be familiar with AMA HOD policy and procedure and actively participate in HOD meetings.
- Three HOD Alternate Delegates – These individuals must be current AMA members and should be able to attend most of the AMA Annual and Interim Meetings. Alternate Delegates should be prepared and able to substitute for Delegates and perform all Delegate roles, if necessary.
- One YPS Delegate – This individual must be a current AMA member and be under 40 years old or in the first six years of practice. He or she may also serve as HOD Delegate/Alternate Delegate. This individual must be available to attend the YPS meeting, which meets the day before the start of the HOD Annual and Interim Meetings. He or she may elect to leave the HOD meeting after the Reference Committee hearings.
- UP to two RFS Delegates – This individual must be a current AMA member and be a current resident or fellow as of the date of the Annual or Interim Meeting for which he or she serves in this role. He or she may also serve as HOD Delegate/Alternate Delegate. This individual must be available to attend the RFS meeting, which meets the day before the start of the HOD Annual and Interim Meetings. He or she may elect to leave the HOD meeting after the Reference Committee hearings.
- Representative – This individual is credentialed to attend the AMA Annual and Interim Meetings, but is not expected to substitute for other members of the Delegation unless notified in advance. This individual is invited to attend all or part of the Annual and Interim Meetings. He or she is strongly encouraged to stay for the first two to three days of each meeting. The Representative position is primarily educational and does not need to be filled for each meeting.
