What to Expect – Program Overview

The program will kick off in early February 2024, followed by in-person programming in April 2024, and graduation in September 2024. The AAN covers all program-related expenses for the selected participants.

  • Coaching: Monthly one-on-one coaching sessions with a consultant.
  • Mentoring: Mentorship with a seasoned member of the AAN that includes regular touchpoints.
  • Group Calls: Regular virtual calls to collaborate on tasks, share experiences, learn, and network.
  • Three Face-to-Face Meetings: Participation and attendance at the February 2024 kickoff; 2024 Annual Meeting in Denver, CO; and concluding with the presentation of the group project to the AAN Board of Directors at the September AAN Board meeting in Washington, DC.
  • Advisor Support: Specialized group project support from a Transforming Leaders Program class graduate.
  • Individual Project: Support and accountability on a program-approved individual project.
  • Group Project: Collaboration on an AAN-assigned group project to challenge, engage, and support each other's learning and development.
  • Engagement with AAN: Learn about the governance, committees, mission/vision, and engage with leadership.
  • Alumni Community: Engage with others in our exclusive leadership alumni community.

Time Commitment Note: Participants are required to attend all leadership meetings, coaching calls, and small group calls. Please plan to spend between 7-12 hours a month on mentor and coaching calls, research, and group project work as a part of the program. Please do not apply for this program if you are unable to invest this time.


How to Apply – Eligibility and Application Requirements

Eligibility

An eligible applicant must be a certified neurologist and active AAN member residing in the United States*

  • Applicant must also be seven or more years out of residency

Application Requirements

Eligible AAN members interested in participating in the program should submit the following documents in PDF format, in addition to your responses to the essay questions, as part of the application process:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Letter of Recommendation
    • It's recommended that letter writers comment on the applicant's leadership potential, self-awareness, and understanding of leadership - with specific examples, if possible.
  • Individual Leadership Project Proposal
    • This proposal should describe your personal leadership project. Include your major goal/vision for the next year and your desired outcome. It could be something in your work environment or community, a new program you'd like to launch, a new system you want to develop, or an old system you'd like to improve and make more effective.
    • Explain how your project could impact and/or improve your work or community and give you real-time transforming leader experience.

Grading Rubric

  • Leadership Potential (Weight = 25%)
  • Self-awareness and understanding of leadership (Weight = 25%)
  • Alignment with program and leadership developmental needs (Weight = 25%)
  • Individual Leadership Project (Weight = 25%)

Selection

Preference will be given to applicants who have not completed any intensive AAN Leadership Program. The diversity and experience of the whole cohort, beyond individual attributes, are considered to provide the best learning experience.
