Maltreatment screening
Measure Purpose: To ensure the safety of patients with neurological conditions.
The numerator: Patients screened* for maltreatment at least once during the measurement period.
*Screening is a yes/no question. Do you feel safe in your home? If no, additional assessment and documentation of all of the following:
- Physical abuse
- Emotional or psychological abuse
- Sexual abuse
- Neglect
- Elder abandonment
- Financial or material exploitation
- Self-neglect
- Unwarranted control
- Question and/or physical examination

The denominator: All patients with a neurological condition
Exclusions:
- Patient refuses
- Patient is in an urgent or emergent situation where time is of the essence and to delay treatment would jeopardize the patient's health status
- Patients that are non-verbal

Measure Calculation Example
Dr. Alfonsi saw 100 patients with a neurological condition between January 1 and December 31 of the measurement year. This is the denominator. Three patients refused to answer the question and one patient was non-verbal. These patients are removed from the denominator.
Of the remaining 96 patients, 36 were screened for maltreatment. This is the numerator.
Quality of care =36/(100-4). Dr. Alfonsi has a score of 37% for this measure.
