It’s Time for Neurology on the Hill!
Latest Advocacy News
- The Secretary of Health and Human Services must recertify the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE) every 90 days so that critical regulatory flexibilities, including those that have allowed for expanded access to telehealth services, can stay in place. The Biden administration has pledged to give stakeholders at least 60 days’ notice prior to terminating the PHE. The current PHE is in place until July 15 and the 60-day notice threshold passed without an announcement from the administration last week. Given the pledge from the administration, stakeholders are predicting that the PHE will be extended past July 15. The AAN continues to closely monitor for any announcement from the administration that would change existing policies.
- On May 19, the AAN in conjunction with the American Medical Association, led a roundtable discussion regarding an AAN proposal to resolve issues relating to team-based care and split (or shared visits) that were included in the 2022 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule.
- The Janice F. Wiesman Congressional Leadership in Neurology Award was recently presented to Representative Brad Wenstrup (R-OH-2) for being an incredible ally of the AAN and its members through his immense support for neuroscience advocacy. This award honors the late AAN member Janice F. Wiesman, MD, FAAN, and her dedication to advocacy.
- The AAN co-hosted a briefing with the Congressional Neuroscience Caucus titled “The Long-haul Neurological and Psychological Impacts from COVID-19.” It featured AAN member Igor Koralnik, MD, along with caucus co-chairs Reps. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) and Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA). Watch a recording here.
- The AAN recently welcomed Madeline Turbes, MPH, Health Policy Manager, to our advocacy team. Madeline will provide key analysis and support policy development to advance the AAN’s state and federal priorities. She will work directly with members of the AAN’s Health Policy Subcommittee and keep members informed about our progress.
Issue in Focus
160 members are in Washington, DC, this week for the 20th annual Neurology on the Hill, educating congressional officials about the top issues facing neurology. Today, members will hear about the state of Congress, learn the skills necessary to have a successful legislative meeting, and master the 2022 priority issues. Tomorrow, members will put those lessons to use with a mixture of in-person and virtual Capitol Hill visits with over 200 members of Congress.
Not in DC, and looking to take action tomorrow? Join the day of advocacy by contacting your members of Congress too! Help your fellow AAN members by sending your own message to ask your legislator to support our issues. Then, follow the conversation and get engaged at #NOH22 and #AANadvocacy.
