Venous Thromboembolism Events (VTE) following primary brain tumor surgery
Measure purpose: Reduce the number of VTE following primary brain tumor surgery.
The numerator: Patients who experience a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) or Pulmonary Embolism (PE) event during their immediate post-surgical hospitalization, identified on diagnostic testing performed

The denominator: all patients who had resection or biopsy of grade III-IV glioma.
Exclusion is removed from the denominator: DVT or PE present at admission. This measure is an inverse measure meaning a lower score indicates better quality.

Measure Calculation Example
Dr. Jones has 100 patients between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2018, that received a resection or biopsy of their grade III-IV glioma. This is the denominator. Two patients had a DVT or PE documented at admission and meeting exclusion criteria.
Five patients experienced a VTE following their resection or biopsy. This is the numerator.
Quality of patient care = 5/(100-2). Dr. Jones has a score of 5% for this measure.
